Canadian Society for Mass Spectrometry

The Canadian Society for Mass Spectrometry (CSMS) is a society dedicated to the promotion of mass spectrometry. There are over 200 CSMS members involved in mass spectrometric research and development in university, industrial and governmental laboratories. The CSMS publishes a newsletter every six months and hosts the Tandem Mass Spectrometry Workshop in Lake Louise, Alberta at the The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise (December 3-6, 2008).

The CSMS makes several awards during the year.  At the Lake Louise meeting, The Lossing Award recognizes significant contributions made to mass spectrometry by a Canadian mass spectrometrist, and commemorates the achievements of Fredrick P. Lossing.  The award is sponsored by Varian Canada and consists of a monetary sum and a print of a painting of the Lake Louise area by Kinsella.  In addition, three awards of a travel grant of $2000 (CA) are made to allow senior Graduate Students to travel to and present at the 2008 Lake Louise Tandem Mass Spectrometry Workshop . The committee encourages applications from interested individuals conducting research in mass spectrometry. These student awards are supported by SCIEX, Waters/Micromass and Thermo Fisher Scientific. Another student travel award, sponsored by Agilent Technologies Canada Inc., provides $2000 to a graduate student to support travel to ASMS meetings. Please see the Awards page for details of application.

CSMS Vice Presidential Results

The period for nominating candidates for the position of Vice President closed on October 15, 2009.  There was one candidate nominated, Professor Paul Mayer from the University of Ottawa.  Paul will therefore become Vice President by acclamation, effective immediately, and an election will therefore not be required.

In addition to his many awards and honours, Paul was the recipient of the F.P. Lossing Award, presented at the Lake Louise Workshop on Tandem Mass Spectrometry in December 2008 in recognition of distinguished contributions to mass spectrometry in Canada.  The Society can expect to benefit  from Paul's experience and leadership qualities.

We heartily congratulate Paul!
