Canadian Society for Mass Spectrometry

The Canadian Society for Mass Spectrometry (CSMS) is a society dedicated to the promotion of mass spectrometry. There are over 200 CSMS members involved in mass spectrometric research and development in university, industrial and governmental laboratories. The CSMS publishes a newsletter every six months and hosts the Tandem Mass Spectrometry Workshop in Lake Louise, Alberta at the The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise (December 3-6, 2008).

The CSMS makes several awards during the year.  At the Lake Louise meeting, The Lossing Award recognizes significant contributions made to mass spectrometry by a Canadian mass spectrometrist, and commemorates the achievements of Fredrick P. Lossing.  The award is sponsored by Varian Canada and consists of a monetary sum and a print of a painting of the Lake Louise area by Kinsella.

Also, three awards of a travel grant of $2000 (CA) are made to allow senior Graduate Students to travel to and present at the Lake Louise Tandem Mass Spectrometry Workshop . The committee encourages applications from interested individuals conducting research in mass spectrometry. These student awards are supported by SCIEX, Waters/Micromass and Thermo Fisher Scientific.

In addition to the Lake Louise student travel awards, Agilent Technologies Canada Inc., and Canadian Life Science Inc. (NEW, starting 2010) each sponsor a student travel award ($2000CA ea) to support student travel to ASMS meetings. Please see the Awards page for details of application.

UPCOMING CONFERENCES AND COURSES

45th Annual Western Canada Trace Organic Workshop

April 26-28, 2010
Vancouver, British Columbia

The 45th Annual Western Canada Trace Organic Workshop will be held in Vancouver, British Columbia, April 26-28, 2010.  There will be a mixer and pre-registration on the evening of April 25th, 2009.

This workshop will provide an opportunity to describe progress in methods development; present research, completed and work in progress; discuss problems; share information concerning testing activities; and provide updates concerning new testing technologies in relation to trace organic analysis of food, feeds, air, tissues, plants, soils and water.

We invite participants to make oral presentations of about 20 minutes in duration (prepared using PowerPoint).  Please note that since this is an informal scientific meeting, presentations do not need to be highly polished. For those not wanting to make an oral presentation, there will be limited space (first come first served) set up for posters.

Registration costs for the workshop is $200.00 ($75.00 for students, maximum 20 student seats available).
